Euphorbia decepta (Sputnik) is a sought-after, dwarf succulent from South Africa, known for its unique, globular stem (caudex) covered in white dots and short, spine-like branches, resembling a "Medusa head". It needs full sun, well-draining soil, and drought tolerance, thriving in warm conditions with sparse watering, especially in winter, and requires careful handling due to its toxic white latex.
DESCRIPTION and CHARACTERISTICS:
- Caudex: Football-shaped, flattened, often partly buried, with a woody texture as it ages, featuring white dots and cracks.
- Branches: Short, stubby, finger-like, with dry peduncle remnants that look like spines.
- Leaves: Very short-lived and fall off, leaving behind the distinctive white dot markings.
- Size: A very slow-growing dwarf, reaching only about 8cm tall and 10cm wide.
- Flowers: Small, greenish-yellow, blooming at the tips of the branches in spring/summer.
CULTIVATION and CARE:
- Sunlight: Full sun, 5-8+ hours daily.
- Water: Drought-tolerant; water sparingly, especially in winter (dry out between waterings), but more in summer.
- Soil: Sandy, sharply draining mix is crucial.
- Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures (70s-80s°F).
- Toxicity: Contains a poisonous white latex; keep away from children and pets and wash hands after handling.
GROWING TIPS:
- Propagation: Can be done from offsets or seeds; dry cuttings for a week before planting.
- Feeding: Infrequent fertilization is sufficient.
- Pests: Watch for typical succulent pests like aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites.
