Euphorbia parvi-medusae is a dwarf, shrubbing succulent species from Somalia that has recently been introduced to cultivation.

Key Characteristics:

  • Stems: Leafless, green, and cylindrical, with rows of spines.
  • Color: The stems feature alternating streaks of light and dark green.
  • Form: A low-growing, compact, and dwarf succulent that branches from a central caudex. It is a rare and collectible species.
  • Flowers: Produces delicate yellow blooms on the branch tips.
  • Sap: Like other euphorbias, it contains a toxic, milky sap that can irritate the skin and eyes.

Uses & Breeding Potential:

  • Ornamental value: This species is prized for its ornamental qualities and is a recent and exciting discovery for succulent collectors.
  • Hybridization: E. parvimedusae is viewed as a valuable asset for breeding new succulent varieties. Its compact, dwarf habit can be used to create smaller, shrubby hybrids of other Euphorbia species. For example, it has been crossed with Euphorbia milii to create a slow-growing hybrid with a sprawling habit and spines.

Cultiation & Care:

  • Light: Requires abundant, bright, and direct light. It should be placed close to a window to ensure it receives enough light.
  • Watering: As a succulent, it is drought-tolerant, but it should be watered sparingly and allowed to dry out between waterings. It is sensitive to overly wet soil, which can cause root rot.
  • Soil: Needs a well-draining potting soil that does not retain too much moisture.
  • Caution: Due to its toxic sap, wear gloves when handling and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
