Euphorbia confinalis ssp. Rhodesia variegata 'Zebra' is a highly sought-after euphorbia known for its exquisite markings and coloring, described as zebra-like stripes. It is native to Zimbabwe. This plant requires heat and sun to grow and look its best.
Key Characteristics:
- Light: This plant needs bright light, preferably indirect sunlight or a sunny window for at least 6-8 hours daily. Avoid low light conditions.
- Watering: Water thoroughly in summer, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Water sparingly in winter. Overwatering is a common issue and can cause rot.
- Soil: Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix, such as one containing perlite or pumice, to prevent root rot.
- Temperature: Ideal temperatures are between 65°F and 80°F. Bring indoors if temperatures drop below 50°F. It is hardy in USDA Zones 10a-12b.
- Fertilizer: Fertilizer is not necessary but can be used to help container plants or supplement poor soil. A diluted, water-soluble, balanced fertilizer can be used monthly.
- Propagation: Can be propagated from stem cuttings. Allow cuttings to callous before planting in gritty soil with rooting hormone.
- Toxicity: Euphorbia plants have a toxic, milky sap that can irritate skin and eyes and is poisonous if swallowed. Handle with care and keep away from children and pets.
