Euphorbia bupleurifolia x susannae is a fascinating hybrid succulent resulting from a cross between Euphorbia bupleurifolia and Euphorbia susannae. This hybrid exhibits unique characteristics inherited from both parent species, making it a popular choice for succulent enthusiasts.
Key Characteristics:
- Pineapple-like Form: This succulent showcases a stout, central body resembling a miniature pineapple or pinecone, inherited from Euphorbia bupleurifolia. This feature is also described as a bulbus caudex.
- Lush Foliage: A crown of slender, pointed, green leaves adorns the top of the plant, similar to those of Euphorbia bupleurifolia. These leaves are described as bluish and channeled.
- Compact Growth: It generally maintains a small size, making it suitable for container gardening, rock gardens, or succulent collections. Mature plants can reach about 5"x5" over many years.
- Clumping Habit: It often forms clusters as it produces pups from the main plant.
- Deciduous: It is a deciduous succulent, meaning it loses its leaves, particularly in the winter.
- Caudex: It has a thickened root merging into a short caudex, which is partially underground. The caudex can be protected from harsh sunlight by sinking the plant slightly into the pot.
- Slow Growth: This hybrid generally grows slowly.
Origin and Habitat:
- Native Range: This hybrid succulent is not found naturally in the wild. It is a garden origin hybrid.
- Parent Species Origin: Both parent species, Euphorbia bupleurifolia and Euphorbia susannae, are native to South Africa. E. bupleurifolia is found in the Eastern Cape Province and KwaZulu-Natal, while E. susannae is endemic to limited areas in the Little Karoo region of the Cape Province.
Care and Cultivation:
- Light: Prefers bright indirect light to full sun.
- Water: Drought tolerant and prefers to be dry in summer. Water only when the soil is completely dry. Overwatering can cause rot.
- Soil: Requires well-drained soil, such as a succulent mix. Adding perlite or vermiculite to the soil can improve drainage.
- Hardiness: Tolerant down to 30°F.
- Dormancy: May experience a dormant period in winter, during which watering should be reduced.
- Fertilizer: Generally does not require added fertilizer, as it is a slow-growing plant. Replacing the potting soil annually can provide sufficient nutrients.
- Humidity: Enjoys humidity and can benefit from regular watering and possibly a nearby humidifier.
- Pet-Safe: No, like many euphorbias, the milky sap is poisonous and can be an irritant. Handle with care and avoid contact with eyes and mouth.
Flowering:
- Wild: May produce flowers in the wild.
- Houseplants: Generally does not flower when kept as a houseplant.
Note: The name "Pineapple Euphorbia" is a common name for this hybrid. It is also known as "Cocklebur".
