Euphorbia ambovombensis is a rare, slow-growing succulent with a prominent caudex (swollen stem base) native to Madagascar. It has a tree-like form with a rounded base and thick, mottled green leaves with red undersides.
Key Characteristics:
· Family: Euphorbiaceae.
· Appearance: This dwarf, geophytic succulent forms a round caudex that becomes larger over time and develops into a small, shrubby bush.
· Leaves: It has thick, leathery leaves with wavy edges. The foliage is green on top and often has a reddish hue on the underside. The plant may drop its leaves during dormancy in the winter.
· Flowers: Unassuming, light green flowers emerge from between the leaves.
· Growth rate: A very slow-growing species, with the caudex taking several years to enlarge.
Care:
· Sunlight: Prefers full sun to light shade. The leaf coloration is more pronounced in brighter light.
· Water: Needs regular watering during the active growing season but requires well-draining soil to prevent root rot. During the winter, it should be kept almost completely dry.
· Soil: Use a gritty, rocky, and well-draining soil mix.
· Fertilizer: Fertilize monthly during the summer with a balanced fertilizer.
· Temperature: It is not frost-tolerant and should be protected during winter. It thrives in high temperatures during the summer.
· Handling: Wear gloves when handling, as the milky white sap can cause skin irritation.
Propagation:
Like all euphorbias, E. tulearensis produces a milky white latex sap that is poisonous and can be irritating.
· This plant can be grown from seeds or cuttings.
· Seed-grown plants tend to develop a larger, more prominent caudex.
· Plants from cuttings will branch more but develop only a tiny caudex.
