Euphorbia abdelkuri is one of the most extraordinary and unmistakable Euphorbias in cultivation, native to Abd al Kuri, an isolated island in Yemen's Socotra Archipelago. In habitat it inhabits an exceptionally harsh, dry landscape of exposed rock and sparse vegetation, developing colonies of upright, almost otherworldly stems. Its ghostly blue-gray surface, nearly complete absence of conventional leaves, and strongly vertical architecture give the species an appearance unlike almost anything else in the genus.

This exact specimen is particularly impressive. Rather than a single column or modest cluster, it has developed 10 established arms rising together into a remarkably dense architectural formation. At approximately 15 inches above the soil line, its tightly grouped stems and varied heights create the appearance of a miniature colony, with the beautiful chalky blue-gray coloration for which the species is prized. Multi-armed specimens like this take considerable time to develop, making this an especially compelling plant for the serious Euphorbia or Socotra collector.

Care Instructions

☀️ Light: Bright light to full sun. Acclimate gradually to intense direct sun, particularly after shipping or periods indoors.

💧 Water: Water thoroughly during active growth, then allow the soil to dry completely before watering again. Keep considerably drier during cool or dormant periods.

🪨 Soil: Requires an exceptionally fast-draining, mineral-rich succulent mix. Avoid heavy organic soils or any medium that remains wet around the roots.

🌡️ Temperature: Warm conditions are preferred. Protect from frost and prolonged cold, particularly when the soil is damp.

💨 Humidity: Low humidity with excellent air circulation is ideal.

🌱 Growth Habit: Upright, columnar and branching with age, eventually forming dense clusters of distinctive blue-gray stems.

⚠️ Special Note: Like other Euphorbias, E. abdelkuri contains a milky latex sap that can irritate skin and eyes. Handle carefully and keep the sap away from children and pets.

Few plants embody the strange botanical character of the Socotra Archipelago quite like Euphorbia abdelkuri. Its native island, Abd al Kuri, lies west of the main island of Socotra between the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Isolation, extreme aridity and relentless exposure have produced a flora filled with forms that seem almost sculptural rather than botanical.

Euphorbia abdelkuri takes that aesthetic to an extreme. Its upright stems are coated in a pale gray-blue surface that can appear almost white in strong light, while its highly reduced foliage reflects an adaptation to an environment where conserving moisture is essential. Mature plants can develop striking groups of vertical stems emerging from seemingly inhospitable rocky terrain.

For collectors, the species is compelling even as a single column. A specimen that has already developed 10 established arms, however, has entered an entirely different stage of character.
