🌵
Eulychnia castanea spiralis is one of the most visually surreal columnar cacti in cultivation — developing an impossibly perfect corkscrew form that feels more sculpted than grown.
Native to the arid coastal deserts of Chile, this rare spiraling form twists upward in slow motion over many years, eventually creating towering architectural specimens unlike anything else in the cactus world. The powdery blue-green skin combined with the rhythmic spiral pattern gives the plant an almost fossilized or oceanic appearance — somewhere between a unicorn horn and a living seashell.
This specimen already displays beautiful mature spiral formation with exceptional symmetry and presence.
A true collector cactus.
Care Instructions
☀️ Light
Bright light to full sun. Strong sunlight encourages tighter growth, richer coloration, and more pronounced spiral development.
💧 Water
Allow soil to dry thoroughly between waterings. Water more frequently during active spring and summer growth, but reduce significantly in winter. Avoid prolonged damp conditions.
🪨 Soil
Requires very fast-draining cactus soil with excellent mineral content and airflow around the roots. Pumice, lava rock, and coarse grit are highly recommended.
🌡️ Temperature
Protect from frost. Prefers warm, dry conditions and temperatures above 40–45°F.
🌵 Growth Habit
Slow-growing spiraling columnar cactus that gradually develops tall corkscrew-shaped stems over time.
✨ Special Note
The pale blue-green skin and natural corking that develop with age are completely normal and highly desirable in mature specimens. Each spiral develops uniquely — no two “Unicorn Cacti” are ever identical.
Why It Stands Out
