Eulychnia castanea cv. varispiralis f. spiralis, also known as the Unicorn Cactus, is a striking cultivar of the Eulychnia castanea cactus, admired for its unique, spiraling growth pattern. It's a popular choice among cactus enthusiasts and collectors.
Key Characteristics:
- Appearance: Features a columnar, ribbed stem that twists in a pronounced spiral fashion, often described as looking like bamboo nodes. It can display variegation (irregular patterns of yellow or cream color). Mature plants can reach a height of 6-10 feet in cultivation.
- Flowers: Produces small, cream-colored to white or pale pink flowers that bloom in the summer, typically near the tips of branches.
- Growth: Slow-growing but relatively easy to cultivate.
- Hardiness: Semi-hardy, preferring warmer climates (60-80°F) and requiring protection from temperatures below 50°F. The crested form is even more sensitive to frost.
Cultivation and Care:
- Sunlight: Requires full sunlight for optimal growth, typically 6-8 hours daily. Provide partial shade during intense summer afternoons.
- Watering: Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Overwatering is a common problem and can lead to root rot. Water less frequently or stop watering altogether in winter.
- Soil: Use a gritty, well-draining cactus mix. You can improve drainage by adding sand or pumice. Some sources suggest a mixture of pumice, clay, and loam.
- Repotting: Repot in the spring, typically every other year, to provide fresh soil and a larger container if needed.
- Fertilizing: Fertilize once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced cactus fertilizer diluted at half strength. Stop fertilizing in winter.
- Propagation: Can be propagated by stem cuttings taken in the spring. Allow the cutting to callus (dry and form a hardened surface) before planting. Grafting onto a suitable rootstock, like Myrtillocactus geometrizans, is also an option.
Important Notes:
- Frost Sensitivity: Protect this cactus from frost, especially the crested form.
- Root Rot: Ensure proper drainage to prevent root rot, as the plant is susceptible to it.
- Variety: Remember that Eulychnia castanea cv. varispiralis f. spiralis is a specific variant of the same cultivated clone, with each plant displaying its unique spiral growth pattern.
The Unicorn Cactus is a fascinating plant to cultivate due to its unique appearance and relatively easy care requirements, as long as its specific needs are met.
