Highly sought-after cultivar of the Eulychnia castanea cactus.
Key features of this cactus:
- Cristated form: This cactus exhibits a "cristata" or crested form, which means it grows in unique, fan-like sculptural shapes. This crested characteristic is especially rare and prized among cactus collectors.
- Spiralis form: While the name suggests a spiral growth pattern, it's important to note that the "spiralis" form specifically describes a columnar, twisting growth habit. The "cristata" form can encompass elements of both spiral and other growth forms.
- Origin: Eulychnia castanea spiralis is a nursery cultivar.
- Uniqueness: Each plant is considered unique, with new branches exhibiting one or a combination of various growth patterns, including monstrous, discoidal, spiral, or crested forms.
Growing conditions and care:
- Sunlight: Prefers plenty of direct sun, with at least five hours daily. Young plants may need protection from intense afternoon sun.
- Water: It's a drought-tolerant cactus, so err on the side of underwatering. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering significantly during the winter months, providing just enough to prevent shriveling.
- Soil: Requires a gritty, well-draining cactus mix, possibly amended with sand or fine pumice for improved drainage.
- Fertilizer: Fertilization isn't strictly necessary, but a balanced cactus fertilizer can be used during the growing season (spring and summer) to refresh the soil or give the plant a boost.
- Propagation: Can be propagated through stem cuttings taken in spring or summer. Allow the cutting to callus before planting it in a well-draining mix.
Important note: The crested form (cristata) is known to be more sensitive to cold than other forms of Eulychnia castanea. Provide adequate protection during colder temperatures.
