Eulychnia castanea cv. varispiralis, commonly known as the Unicorn Cactus or Spiral Cactus, is a rare, sculptural cultivar prized for its unique, twisting growth patterns. Unlike the wild Eulychnia castanea native to coastal Chile, this variety exists primarily in cultivation and exhibits extreme morphological diversity.

DESCRIPTION and CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Growth Habit: A slow-growing, columnar cactus that can eventually reach up to 6.5 feet in height.
  • Morphological Forms: This cultivar is highly variable, often producing four distinct growth patterns—sometimes on the same plant:
    • Spiral Form: Features smooth, whirly spirals that can twist clockwise or counter-clockwise.
    • Monstrous Form: Characterized by a "lumpy-bumpy" or asymmetrical texture.
    • Discoidal Form: Stems appear as stacked green discs.
    • Crested Form: Rare, fan-like sculptural growths.
  • Flowers: Small, white diurnal blooms that typically appear in spring or summer.

CULTIVATION and CARE:

  • Light: Thrives in full sun to light shade. Introduce to direct sunlight gradually to prevent sunburn.
  • Watering: Follow a "soak and dry" method during the summer growing season. It is critical to keep the plant completely dry during winter dormancy to prevent rot.
  • Soil: Use a coarse, well-draining mineral mix (e.g., Planet Desert Cactus Soil) with a 1:1 ratio of cactus soil to grit or pumice.
  • Hardiness: Best suited for USDA Zones 10a–11b; it is not frost-tolerant.
  • Safety: Known to be non-toxic to humans, cats, and dogs.
