Key features (of Epithelantha micromeris in general)

·        Appearance: Small, globular cactus covered in dense, tiny, white to grayish spines that give it a fuzzy or silvery appearance. The spines often completely cover the green body.

·        Size: Typically grows to 1 to 5 cm in height and 2 to 4 cm in diameter.

·        Flowers: Produces small, pink to white flowers at the apex of the plant in late winter to early spring.  These are considered some of the smallest flowers among cacti species.

·        Fruit: Produces bright red, cylindrical, edible fruit after flowering.

Habitat and Range

·        Native to the southwestern United States (Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas) and northeastern Mexico.

·        Grows in desert grasslands and woodlands, often in crevices and rocky areas.

Cultivation and care

·        Light: Prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade.

·        Watering: Requires infrequent watering, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Suspending watering during the winter months can encourage better flowering. Overwatering can lead to root rot.

·        Soil: Needs very well-draining soil, such as a cactus and succulent mix.  Adding crushed granite can improve drainage.

·        Temperature: Not cold hardy below 20° F (-6.7° C). If winters are colder, it's best to grow indoors.

·        Fertilizing: Fertilize sparingly, especially during the growing season.

·        Propagation: Can be propagated from seeds or offsets. Propagation by seeds can be challenging and slow.
