Epithelantha bokei f. cristata is a fascinating crested form of the already unique Epithelantha bokei cactus. It's also known by common names like Crested Ping-pong Ball Cactus, Crested Button Cactus, and Crested Boke's Button Cactus.
Appearance and Features
This is a slow-growing miniature cactus with stems reaching only 2-3 cm in height. Its dense, tiny white spines make it appear white and feel smooth. Pale pink or yellowish flowers bloom in July, and the bright red, edible fruits are about 1 cm long and enjoyed by birds. The plant shrinks and draws back to ground level during drought and winter to conserve moisture.
Habitat
Native to the Chihuahuan Desert in South Texas and northern Mexico, Epithelantha bokei f. cristata is an "edaphic specialist" that thrives in dense groups on calcareous strata of raised limestone hills. While locally abundant, illegal collection poses a threat to some subpopulations.
Cultivation and Care
This relatively easy-to-grow but very slow plant requires coarse, well-draining soil to prevent root rot. Water infrequently, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings, to maintain its compact form. It needs strong to partial sun for spine growth, with some shade during the hottest summer periods. Good ventilation is also important. It can tolerate temperatures down to -5°C (USDA Zones 8-11). Overwatering is a common issue, leading to squishy stems; if this occurs, cut above the rot and replant after the cut has callused. Propagation can be done through grafting or cuttings. The plant is not known to be harmful to humans or pets.
