The Crassula ovata 'Gollum' (also known as Gollum Jade, E.T. Fingers, or Trumpet Jade) is a distinctive, easy-to-care-for succulent that features unique, tubular, green leaves with red tips when exposed to bright sunlight. It is a popular choice for containers and bonsai due to its shrub-like, upright habit and thick trunk that develops with age.
CULTIVATION and CARE:
- Light: This plant thrives in bright, direct sunlight for at least four to six hours daily, such as in a south or west-facing window. While it can tolerate partial shade, ample light encourages the attractive red coloring on the leaf tips and prevents the plant from becoming "leggy".
- Watering: As a succulent, it is highly susceptible to overwatering. Use the "soak and dry" method, watering thoroughly only when the soil is completely dry to the touch. The leaves may feel soft or appear slightly wrinkled when the plant is thirsty. During the dormant winter months, reduce watering significantly to about once or twice for the entire season.
- Soil: A well-draining soil mix is crucial to prevent root rot. A commercial succulent or cactus potting mix, often amended with perlite, pumice, or coarse sand, is ideal for providing the necessary aeration and drainage.
- Temperature and Humidity: Gollum Jade is comfortable in typical indoor temperatures, ideally between 65 to 75°F (18 to 24°C) during the day. It prefers the low to average humidity found in most homes and does not require misting. It is not frost-hardy and should be protected from temperatures below 45°F (7°C).
- Fertilizing: Feed sparingly during its active growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted, all-purpose liquid fertilizer or one specifically formulated for cacti and succulents, about once or twice a month. Avoid fertilizing in the fall and winter.
- Pruning and Propagation: Pruning is beneficial for shaping the plant and encouraging a thicker, denser crown. It can be easily propagated from stem or leaf cuttings.
- Flowering: Mature plants may produce small, star-shaped, pinkish-white flowers in the fall and winter, especially when kept in a cool, dry place during the colder months.
