Crassula ovata, commonly known as the jade plant, is a popular succulent houseplant known for its attractive appearance and relative ease of care.
Key Characteristics:
- Leaves: Fleshy, oval-shaped leaves that store water, often appearing glossy and dark green, with red tinges at the edges when exposed to ample sunlight. The species name "ovata" itself means "egg-shaped," referencing the shape of the leaves.
- Stems: Thick and woody, resembling tiny tree trunks, giving the plant a bonsai-like appearance as it matures.
- Growth Habit: Typically grows as a branched shrub, reaching heights of 3-6 feet indoors, but can grow much larger outdoors in its native habitat. It has a slow to moderate growth rate, gaining about two inches in height per year.
- Origin: Native to the dry, rocky hillsides of South Africa and Mozambique.
- Flowers: Under ideal conditions, mature jade plants can produce clusters of small, star-shaped white or light pink flowers, often in the winter.
- Common Names: Also known by various other names like Friendship tree, Money plant, Lucky plant, or Money tree.
Care Requirements:
- Light: Thrives in bright, direct sunlight, ideally receiving at least 4 hours of direct sun daily.
- Watering: Water thoroughly when the top of the soil is dry to the touch, but reduce watering during the winter months. Avoid overwatering, as jade plants are susceptible to root rot.
- Soil: Requires well-draining soil, such as a succulent or cactus mix.
- Temperature: Prefers average to cool indoor temperatures.
- Hardiness: Hardy in USDA zones 9-10. Can tolerate light frost in regions with mild weather, provided the soil is kept dry.
- Propagation: Easily propagated from leaf or stem cuttings.
Additional Notes:
- Jade plants can be pruned and shaped to maintain a desired size or form, including a bonsai-like appearance.
- Tiny white or black dots on the leaves are normal, healthy hydathodes (pores) for water transfer.
- While relatively easy to care for, they are susceptible to pests like aphids, scale, spider mites, and mealybugs.
- The plant is reported to have low severity poison characteristics.
- Crassula ovata has been cultivated for over 1000 years.
- Mature plants can live for 50-100 years under ideal conditions.
