Copiapoa cinerea is a highly sought-after cactus known for its striking appearance and resilience in extremely arid environments.

·        Chalky/white stems: Covered with wool at the apex, providing a unique contrast to the sparse, jet-black spines.

·        Solitary or slowly offsetting: It can be found as single plants or forming small clumps over time.

·        Globular to columnar shape: The stems can reach up to 1.2 meters tall and 10-20 cm in diameter.

·        White coloration: This is a waxy coating that acts as a protective mechanism against harsh sunlight and reduces water loss.

·        Variability: The species exhibits a wide range of forms, with some plants having long spines and others being spineless.

·        Yellow flowers: These funnel-shaped flowers are 1.5 to 2.5 cm in diameter and can occasionally have a pink or reddish tint.

Habitat and distribution

This unique cactus is endemic to the coastal fog deserts of northern Chile, specifically the Antofagasta and Atacama regions.

·        It thrives in extremely arid conditions, where rainfall is minimal.

·        The plants primarily rely on frequent coastal fogs for moisture, which condense on their surfaces.

·        It grows on coastal hills and lomas costas, at elevations up to 3,300 meters above sea level.

Cultivation

Copiapoa cinerea is a slow-growing cactus, but it can be successfully cultivated with proper care.

·        Soil: Requires a very porous, well-draining soil mix.

·        Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade, but needs protection from excessive summer sun.

·        Watering: Water regularly from spring to autumn, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering during winter dormancy.

·        Temperature: Heat-tolerant but not frost-tolerant. Keep warm and dry in winter, around 10°C (50°F).

·        Fertilization: Fertilize with a high potassium fertilizer during the summer growing season.

·        Propagation: Can be propagated from seeds or offsets.
