Cleistocactus winteri 'Cristata', commonly known as the Crested Golden Rat Tail, is a fascinating and visually unique form of the Golden Rat Tail cactus, native to Bolivia. It’s distinct characteristic lies in its crested growth habit, resulting in dense clusters of twisting, fan-shaped stems instead of the typical elongated, trailing stems. These stems are adorned with soft golden bristles, giving the plant a charming, fuzzy appearance.
The stems of this cactus are densely clustered, long, and cylindrical, reaching up to 90 cm in length and 2-2.5 cm in diameter. They are covered in flexible, golden bristles. In the spring and summer, the plant produces abundant salmon-pink to orange funnel flowers. It has a creeping, hanging, or trailing growth habit and grows slowly, potentially reaching heights of 2 to 5 meters.
Care and cultivation
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light, but can tolerate some direct morning sun. Avoid harsh midday sun to prevent sunburn. South or west-facing windows are ideal indoors, potentially supplemented with a grow light.
- Watering: Water thoroughly when the soil is dry during the growing season (spring to early fall), typically every 10-14 days. Water sparingly or not at all in winter. Overwatering can lead to stem rot.
- Soil: Requires well-drained soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix, which can be improved with perlite or vermiculite.
- Temperature: Thrives in warm temperatures (70-100°F or 21-38°C). It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, tolerating brief periods down to 28°F (-2°C), but protect from frost. A cool rest period in fall and winter at 50-55°F (10-12°C) can encourage flowering.
- Fertilizing: During the growing season, fertilize monthly with a balanced cactus fertilizer (e.g., 2-7-7) or a high potassium liquid feed, applied sparingly.
- Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years or when needed, using a slightly larger pot with good drainage. Handle carefully to avoid damaging spines.
- Propagation: Can be propagated from stem cuttings or seeds. Allow cuttings to callous for a few days before planting in well-draining soil and keeping it slightly moist until roots form.
- Other: Moderate to high humidity can be beneficial. Pruning is generally not necessary, but dead or damaged stems can be trimmed.
