🌵

Clean, vertical, and quietly imposing, Cleistocactus strausii is defined by restraint. Tall, columnar stems rise in parallel, each one wrapped in a dense layer of fine, silvery spines that soften the plant’s otherwise rigid structure.

From a distance, it reads almost monochrome—cool grey, nearly white—giving it a muted, almost industrial tone. Up close, the texture reveals itself: thousands of fine, hair-like spines catching light and creating a subtle halo around each column.

Growth is steady and upward, forming clusters that feel ordered but never rigid. Over time, it becomes less about a single stem and more about repetition—vertical lines building into a larger composition.

In maturity, narrow, tubular red flowers may emerge from the sides of the columns, breaking the uniform surface with small, precise bursts of color.

This is a plant that doesn’t compete for attention. It holds it through structure, repetition, and light.

🌱 Care Guide

Light
Prefers bright light to full sun. Strong light encourages compact, dense growth and maintains the plant’s clean vertical form.

Water
Water thoroughly, then allow soil to dry completely before watering again. Reduce watering in winter.

Soil
Requires a fast-draining cactus mix. Adding pumice or other mineral components will improve drainage and stability.

Temperature
More cold-tolerant than many cacti, but still best kept above ~40°F (4°C). Protect from prolonged frost.

Humidity
Prefers low humidity and good airflow.

Growth Habit
Columnar and clustering, with upright stems that can reach significant height over time. Growth is moderate and consistent.

Special Note
The dense spines provide some protection from sun and cold, but also trap dust—occasional gentle cleaning can help maintain its appearance.
