The Monkey Tail Cactus, scientifically known as Cleistocactus colademononis or sometimes Cleistocactus winteri ssp. colademononis, is a captivating and popular cactus species, known for its long, trailing stems and furry, white spines resembling a monkey's tail.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS

This cactus features long, trailing stems with dense, soft, white hairs, giving them a fuzzy appearance. These stems can grow to significant lengths, potentially reaching 8 feet in their natural environment, but typically stay around 4 or 5 feet when grown indoors.

The plant produces vibrant, tubular red or orange flowers, usually blooming in late spring and early summer, though it can flower at other times if conditions are optimal.

Native to high-altitude regions of Bolivia and Argentina, it thrives in rocky, dry areas, often found growing on cliffs.

CARE & CULTIVATION

The Monkey Tail Cactus thrives in bright, indirect sunlight or partial sun, and needs well-draining soil.

It requires minimal watering, needing the soil to dry completely between waterings to prevent root rot, and even less during fall and winter dormancy.

The ideal temperature range during the growing season is 60-80°F, though it can tolerate temperatures as low as 28°F briefly. A cooler winter rest period (50-55°F) may encourage flowering.

The cactus prefers low humidity and benefits from good airflow.

Light fertilization is recommended during spring and summer, but not while dormant.

Propagation is simple using stem cuttings, which should be allowed to dry and form a callous before planting.

COMMON PROBLEMS

Common issues include root rot from overwatering or poor drainage, sunburn from intense direct sunlight, and pests such as mealybugs, scale insects, and spider mites.

OTHER INTERESTING FACTS

The Monkey Tail Cactus is non-toxic to humans and pets. It is drought-tolerant and popular for hanging baskets due to its unique appearance. It has received the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).
