Cleistocactus colademononis cristata variegata is a rare and highly sought-after cactus known for its combination of unusual features: crested growth, variegated coloration, and the soft, white spines of the standard monkey tail cactus.

Key Characteristics:

  • Crested growth (cristata): Unlike the trailing, cylindrical stems of a normal monkey tail cactus, the cristata mutation causes the stems to grow in a dense, convoluted, fan-like shape.
  • Variegated coloration (variegata): The cactus has sections with reduced chlorophyll, creating streaks and patches of white, cream, or yellow on the stems alongside the normal green. This enhances its ornamental value.
  • Soft spines: Like the standard species, this cactus is covered in long, soft, white spines that give it a furry or hairy appearance.
  • Flowers: When it does bloom, it produces vibrant, tubular flowers in shades of red or orange.

Cultivation Requirements:

To keep this rare specimen healthy, provide care that addresses its unique characteristics and mirrors the needs of the standard monkey tail cactus.

Light

Provide bright, indirect sunlight. While the plant can tolerate some direct sun, too much can cause the delicate, variegated parts of the stem to burn.

Soil

·        Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix.

·        Increase drainage by amending the soil with mineral grit like perlite, pumice, or coarse sand, making up 70–80% of the mixture.

Watering

·        Water sparingly and allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.

·        Overwatering is the most common cause of problems like root rot. Reduce watering significantly during the winter months when the plant is dormant.

Temperature and humidity

·        Temperature: Protect the plant from frost. It is not cold-hardy and should be brought indoors if temperatures drop below 41°F (5°C). It thrives in temperatures between 60–80°F (15–27°C) during the growing season.

·        Humidity: The cactus prefers low to moderate humidity, mirroring its native arid climate. Avoid placing it in overly humid areas like bathrooms.

Potting

A wide, shallow pot is often best for crested cacti, as it can accommodate their unique growth pattern. Displaying it in a hanging pot can showcase its distinctive form.

PROPAGATION

Propagation is typically done through cuttings, as the crested and variegated traits are a genetic mutation.

  1. Use a sterile, sharp knife to cut a section of a healthy stem.
  2. Allow the cut end to form a callous for several days to prevent rot.
  3. Plant the cutting in a well-draining cactus mix.
  4. Keep the soil slightly moist until the cutting develops roots, which can take several weeks.
