The Cereus peruvianus var. monstrose, also known as the Monstrose Apple Cactus or the Hedge Cactus, is a unique and captivating variety of the Cereus peruvianus cactus. What distinguishes this variety is its unusual growth pattern, characterized by contorted stems, twisted ribs, and knobby protrusions, giving it an almost sculptural or architectural appearance. This "monstrose" growth is a natural mutation that makes the plant visually distinctive.

Key features and characteristics

·        Growth Habit: This cactus is known for its tree-like, multi-branched form, often growing in a candelabra shape. It can reach heights of 10 to 30 feet, with individual stems growing up to 10-20 cm in diameter.

·        Stems: The stems are cylindrical and typically exhibit a gray-green to blue-green coloration, often with a waxy coating. The ribs have an irregularly undulating pattern, which is the hallmark of the monstrose form.

·        Spines: Along the ribs, small areoles bear clusters of sharp spines, so handle with care.

·        Flowers: The Monstrose Apple Cactus produces large, fragrant flowers that are typically white or cream-colored, sometimes with pink hues. These flowers are nocturnal, opening in the evening and remaining open into the following day. They can reach 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) in diameter.

·        Fruit: After blooming, the cactus can produce round, edible red to yellowish fruits, commonly called Peruvian apples or pitaya. The flesh is sweet and white with small, crunchy black seeds.

·        Hardiness: This variety is relatively cold-hardy, tolerating temperatures down to about 20°F (-7°C). However, the growing tips of the branches are vulnerable to frost and should be protected during periods of subfreezing temperatures.

·        Native Range: It's native to South America, including Peru and Brazil, thriving in arid and semi-arid regions.

     Care and maintenance

  • Light: Provide plenty of bright light, preferably full sun to partial shade. If grown indoors, a south-facing window is ideal.

  • Water: As a desert cactus, it's drought tolerant. Water thoroughly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot. Overwatering is a common mistake. During the active growing season (spring and summer), you can water more frequently.

  • Soil: Use a well-draining cactus mix, preferably with added perlite or pumice for extra drainage.

  • Temperature: The ideal temperature range is 60-76°F. While it can tolerate temperatures down to 20°F, it's best to protect it from frost.

  • Fertilizer: Fertilize sparingly during the growing season with a balanced cactus fertilizer.

  • Pests and Diseases: Keep an eye out for pests like mealybugs and scale.

Propagation

·        Cuttings: The easiest and most common way to propagate this cactus is through stem cuttings.

·        Callusing: Allow the cut end of the stem to callus over for one to two weeks before planting.

·        Planting: Plant the callused cutting in a well-drained cactus mix during the warmer months, burying it a few inches deep for support.

·        Seeds: You can also propagate from seeds, but this is a slower process.

Additional notes

  • Growth Rate: The Monstrose Apple Cactus has a slow to moderate growth rate, taking many years to reach a mature size.

  • Ornamental Value: Its striking appearance makes it a sought-after collector's item and a visually appealing ornamental plant for gardens or containers.

  • Toxicity: The Monstrose Apple Cactus  is generally considered non-toxic to humans and pets.

With its unique and captivating form, the Cereus peruvianus var. monstrose is a rewarding cactus to grow, requiring minimal care and adding a distinctive element to any plant collection or landscape.
