The Cereus forbesii 'Super Spiralis', also known as the Spiral Cactus, Tornado Cactus, or Wonderful Wacky Cactus, is a visually striking cultivar of the Cereus forbesii species. It's prized for its unique architectural form, featuring tall, columnar, blue-green stems that grow in a captivating spiral pattern.

Key characteristics and care:

  • Spiral Growth: The defining feature of the Spiral Cactus is its spiral growth pattern, which typically begins when the plant reaches about 10 cm in height. This unique growth is the result of a natural mutation.
  • Size and Growth: This cactus can grow quite tall, reaching 6 to 13 feet with multiple branches, creating a candelabra-like appearance. It's known for being a fast grower.
  • Flowers: Mature plants can produce pink or white funnel-shaped flowers that open at night during the growing season, typically late spring and early summer.
  • Origin: The Cereus forbesii species is native to South America, with the 'Spiralis' cultivar originating from a mutation. Cuttings were brought to Europe around 1980.
  • Care: The Spiral Cactus is relatively low-maintenance. It thrives in bright, indirect sunlight but can handle direct sun and partial shade. It prefers well-draining soil and should be watered sparingly, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings to prevent root rot. Warm temperatures (60-85°F) are preferred, and it needs protection from frost. Fertilize during the growing season with a cactus or succulent fertilizer.
  • Other Notes: This cactus is generally considered non-toxic, but its spines require careful handling. The spiral trait is not always passed through seeds, so propagation via cuttings is often used to ensure the desired shape.

The Cereus forbesii 'Super Spiralis' is a distinctive and relatively easy-to-care-for cactus that adds an eye-catching architectural element to indoor or outdoor spaces.
