Astrophytum ornatum, commonly known as the Monk's Hood or Star Cactus, is the largest species in the genus Astrophytum. It is a slow-growing and visually striking cactus, highly sought after by collectors for its geometric form and unique patterns.

Characteristics

  • Appearance: When young, the cactus is globular, but with age, it becomes more columnar and can grow up to 1.2 meters tall in its native habitat. It typically has eight prominent, spiraling ribs, though this can vary.
  • Markings: The green to grayish-green stem is decorated with distinctive cross-bands of white, woolly scales, the density and pattern of which can vary greatly between individual plants.
  • Spines: Each areole features sturdy, golden-yellow spines, with a single longer central spine surrounded by several smaller radial ones.
  • Flowers: Large, lemon-yellow flowers bloom from the top (apex) of the plant during the summer, opening during the day.

Cultivation and Care

  • Light: A. ornatum requires bright light and can tolerate full sun. Indoor plants should be placed in a sunny, south-facing window.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining, porous soil mix formulated for cacti and succulents. Adding extra pumice or perlite can improve drainage.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly during the spring and summer, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering drastically or stop entirely during the winter dormant season to prevent rot.
  • Fertilizing: Feed the plant with a balanced, diluted cactus fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring and summer). Do not fertilize during the winter.
  • Temperature: Protect the plant from frost. It can tolerate temperatures between 40 and 70°F (4–21°C) during the winter, but it must be kept dry.
  • Pests: Watch for common pests like mealybugs and scale insects.

Habitat and Distribution

  • Native range: This cactus is native to the Central Plateau of Mexico, where it grows in arid to semi-arid conditions.
  • Growing conditions: In the wild, it can be found in wild canyons and on limestone cliffs at altitudes of 800 to 2,000 meters. Its distribution is somewhat patchy due to habitat destruction from livestock, mining, and illegal collection.
