The Astrophytum Myriostigma var. Nudum cv. Kikko is a rare and striking cactus cultivar, often referred to as the "Bishop's Cap" cactus due to its shape.
Key Features:
- Appearance:
- It's a spineless cactus with smooth, often greenish or bluish-green stems.
- It differs from the standard Astrophytum myriostigma by lacking the white flecks (trichomes) that give it a speckled look.
- It features pointed tubercles along the ribs edges, giving it a "saw tooth" or bumpy appearance.
- These tubercles and the furrows between them create a raised, geometric design on the ribs, resembling a tortoise-shell (hence "Kitsu-kow" meaning "Turtle shell" in Japanese).
- Young seedlings may appear normal, with the characteristic "saw teeth" developing as the plant matures (typically between 3 to 7 years old).
- It typically has 5 ribs.
- It can grow up to 120 cm tall and 5-10 cm in diameter.
- Flowers:
- Produces pale-yellow, silk-shining flowers.
- Blooms in spring or early summer.
- May take up to 6 years to bloom.
Cultivation:
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light, and can tolerate full sun but needs protection from intense midday sun to prevent burning.
- Soil: Requires a well-draining cactus mix or sandy loam with good drainage. A mineral-based soil with little organic matter is ideal.
- Watering:
- Water sparingly and allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
- Reduce watering in winter, keeping the plant dry to prevent root rot.
- Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures and is hardy to USDA zones 8b – 10b, but may need protection from frost.
- Fertilizing: During the growing season (spring/summer), use a low-nitrogen fertilizer.
- Propagation: Primarily by seed. Vegetative propagation (cuttings) can be done with root compound.
- Pests/Diseases: Watch for mealybugs and potential root rot from overwatering.
Important Notes:
- This cultivar is a Japanese cultivar.
- While seedlings may not immediately show the "Kikko" features, they will develop as the plant matures.
- Like other succulents, they prefer dry environments, so avoid misting the leaves.
- The plant is not known to be toxic to humans or pets.
WINTER SHIPPING - Heat Pack Required
If your area is under 40°F, add a heat pack to your order (search "heat pack" in our shop).
This is essential to insure your plant does not suffer cold damage while travelling.
We do not replace/refund cold-damaged plants without a heat pack.
SHIPPING - IMPORTANT: We strongly recommend you select PRIORITY MAIL for your plant delivery. USPS Ground Advantage can take 10 days or more to reach the East Coast. For a faster, safe, more reliable option, please choose USPS Priority Mail so that your living plants are not in a box for that long. We want your plants to arrive to you safe and happy. To that end we package them as if we were shipping to our own mother. Sometimes a few leaves may drop or color may change in transit but don't worry. It's perfectly normal and your plant will most likely take a few days to re-acclimate to its new home.
TIPS
ü Once you receive your plant, take it out and let it check out its new home. It may be a little tired from travelling (aren’t we all!). Plant it in new vitamin enriched soil and your plant should soon acclimate to its new surroundings.
ü Don’t put in direct sun immediately but gradually increase sun exposure to avoid burning.
ü Don’t overwater – cactus and succulents for the most part don’t want to be watered until they are dry half inch deep in the soil. Many cactus do not need watering at all in the winter months or during the plant’s dormant period. And never let your cactus or succulent sit in water…check those drip trays!
ü We generally recommend a porous, well-drained soil. With many varieties you can also make your own by mixing dirt/perlite at a 1:1 ratio.
ü Sing to your plants! It’s good for both of you!
