Astrophytum myriostigma cv. 'Onzuka', also known as Bishop's Hat or Bishop's Cap cactus, is a highly decorative cultivar of the Astrophytum myriostigma species. It was selectively bred in Japan in the mid-1970s by Mr. Tsutomu Onzuka, for whom it is named.

Here's what makes this cultivar special:

Appearance

·        Star-shaped, spineless body: Typically with five prominent ribs, creating a star-like shape.

·        Dense white marbling/flecking: The most notable characteristic is the striking white speckling or flecking on the green surface, giving it a frosted appearance. These markings are more pronounced and denser than those of the standard A. myriostigma.

·        Unique patterns: The white markings vary from plant to plant, creating a variety of beautiful patterns. Some improved cultivars exhibit distinctive "V-marks" along the edges of the ribs.

·        Size: It can reach a mature size of 30-40 cm in height.

Cultivation and care

·        Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; however, it can tolerate some direct sunlight.

·        Watering: Needs to be watered sparingly, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering significantly during the winter months.

·        Soil: Requires well-draining cactus and succulent soil, with a high mineral grit content (70-80% coarse sand, pumice, or perlite).

·        Temperature: This cactus is not frost-hardy and needs to be brought indoors if temperatures are expected to freeze. It is hardy to -7°C for short periods. The ideal temperature range during the growing season (March to October) is 5-15°C.

·        Hardiness zones: USDA zones 10a to 11b.

·        Special considerations: The epidermis of 'Onzuka' is harder than normal A. myriostigma and can crack if overwatered.

Propagation

·        Primarily by seed: The seeds are collected from the dried flowers. Seedlings need to be kept out of direct sunlight and dry conditions and should be repotted frequently.

·        Grafting: Grafting onto column-shaped cacti is sometimes used to accelerate growth, as plants grown on their own roots can take at least five years to reach maturity. Grafted plants tend to grow taller than those grown on their own roots.

·        Division: Offsets can be carefully removed and replanted in their own pots.

Astrophytum myriostigma cv. 'Onzuka' is a beautiful and sought-after cactus cultivar renowned for its unique appearance, particularly the dense white marbling on its star-shaped body. While considered a choice plant in cultivation, it is relatively easy to grow when provided with appropriate light, water, and well-draining soil. It is primarily propagated by seed, though grafting and division are also possible. Its striking features and relatively easy care make it a popular choice for cactus enthusiasts and collectors.
