The crested form of Astrophytum myriostigma 'Onzuka' is one of the most sculptural cultivars in cactus collecting. Rather than developing the familiar star-shaped body, the growing point elongates into a flowing crest, producing intricate folds and undulating ridges that continue to evolve with age. The distinctive Onzuka patterning—formed by dense white flecking across the epidermis—adds remarkable texture, giving each specimen the appearance of a naturally weathered limestone formation. No two crests ever develop alike, making every plant a one-of-a-kind living sculpture.

🌞 Care Instructions

☀️ Light — Bright light to several hours of direct sun. Introduce stronger sunlight gradually if moving outdoors.

💧 Water — Water thoroughly only after the soil has completely dried. Keep almost completely dry during winter dormancy.

🪨 Soil — Requires an exceptionally fast-draining mineral cactus mix with excellent airflow around the roots.

🌡️ Temperature — Prefers warm growing conditions. Protect from frost and prolonged temperatures below 40°F.

🌬️ Humidity — Enjoys low humidity and good air circulation.

📈 Growth Habit — Slow growing. As the crest matures it develops increasingly intricate folds and dramatic sculptural character.
