Astrophytum myriostigma cv. Onzuka cristata is a fascinating and sought-after cultivar of the Bishop's Cap cactus, known for its unique crested growth habit.
Key Characteristics:
- Crested Growth: Instead of a typical spherical or columnar shape, this cultivar exhibits a fan-shaped or undulating growth pattern, often described as "brain-like". This unusual form results from the growth point of the stem switching from a single point to a line, causing the crest to fold and expand irregularly.
- Appearance: It forms beautiful white-textured crested stems, making it resemble a non-cactus succulent in some cases. The intensity of the white speckling varies, and plants may change their appearance as they age.
- Rarity: While crested cacti occur naturally, the crested form of Astrophytum myriostigma, and particularly the 'Onzuka' cultivar, is quite rare. This rarity contributes to its desirability among collectors.
- Origin: The 'Onzuka' cultivar was developed in Japan by Mr. Tsutomu Onzuka.
Cultivation:
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect sunlight, though it can tolerate some sun exposure during the summer. Protection from intense midday sun is important.
- Watering: Water sparingly and allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot. Reduce watering significantly during the winter dormancy period.
- Soil: Use a well-draining cactus mix or a mix with ample perlite or coarse sand to ensure good drainage.
- Temperature: Maintain warm temperatures during the growing season. It can tolerate some cold but protect from frost and freezes.
- Ventilation: Good ventilation is essential to prevent root rot.
- Propagation: Typically propagated through grafting, though cuttings may be attempted.
Note: The exact cause of the crested growth is not fully understood, with possibilities including genetic mutation, lightning strikes, or freeze damage.
