Astrophytum Myriostigma cv. Fukuryu, also known as a "Bishop's Cap" cactus, is a unique cultivar recognized for its distinctive appearance and slow growth. This spineless cactus has a star-shaped body, typically with five ribs, and is known for having additional, woolly areoles (small, hair-like structures) along its ribs, giving it a unique texture. It also produces beautiful yellow, daisy-like flowers in the spring and summer.

Key Features and Characteristics:

  • Appearance:

The Fukuryu cultivar is characterized by its star-shaped body, often with five or more ribs, and the presence of extra areoles along its ribs, giving it a unique texture.

  • Trichomes:

Unlike some other Astrophytum varieties, the Fukuryu variety typically lacks the characteristic white trichomes (hairs) that give them a speckled appearance, resulting in a cleaner, smoother look.

  • Flowers:

It produces beautiful yellow, daisy-like flowers that bloom at the top of the ribs in spring and summer.

  • Growth:

Fukuryu is a slow-growing cactus, which makes it a desirable addition to collections.

  • Care:

It is relatively low-maintenance, requiring well-draining soil, partial to full sun, and minimal watering (particularly in winter).

Unique Aspects:

  • "Fukuryu" Name:

The name "Fukuryu" is a Japanese term meaning "additional ribs" or "multiple ribs," referring to the plant's distinctive ribbing.

  • Two Forms:

The name "Fukuryu" is sometimes used for two distinct forms: Type A, with small, partially developed extra ribs, and Type B, with more prominent irregular "warts" on the ribs.

  • Aesthetic Value:

The Fukuryu cactus is known for its elegance and beauty, making it a popular choice for cactus enthusiasts.
