The Astrophytum asterias cv. Kikko Lizard Skin is a highly prized, rare Japanese hybrid cactus known for its bumpy, warty, reptilian texture, raised tubercles, and geometric patterns resembling turtle shells (Kikko) or lizard/elephant skin. It's a unique, sought-after collector's item, requiring bright light (morning/evening sun ideal), well-draining soil, moderate watering (less in winter), and protection from frost, developing its distinctive features as it matures over several years.
DESCRIPTION and CHARACTERISTICS:
- Appearance: Spherical to flattened, green to olive-green body with prominent, bag-like tubercles and a rough, wrinkled skin texture.
- Name Origin: "Kikko" (Japanese for turtle shell) refers to the bumpy, tortoise-shell-like appearance, while "Lizard Skin" describes its unique bumpy texture.
- Maturity: Young seedlings look ordinary; the characteristic features develop as the plant ages (3-7 years).
CULTIVATION and CARE:
- Light: Bright, filtered sunlight; morning/evening sun is best; can tolerate full sun but protect from intense afternoon heat.
- Watering: Water moderately when soil is dry; less in spring/summer (every two weeks), very little in autumn, none in winter.
- Soil: Well-draining, mineral-rich substrate (e.g., cactus mix with pumice).
- Temperature: Prefers 65-80°F (18-27°C), protect from temperatures below 4°C (39°F).
- Fertilizer: Infrequent; dilute fertilizer once a year.
GROWING TIPS:
- Nudum: A nude form with very large, prominent tubercles and a bumpy surface.
- Cristata (Crested): A rare mutation where the plant grows along a line rather than a central point, creating a crested form.
