Astrophytum asterias cv. Superkabuto, often referred to simply as 'Super Kabuto', is a popular and striking cultivar of the Astrophytum asterias cactus, known for its unique appearance and relatively easy care.
Distinctive appearance
- Fuzzy Epidermis: What sets 'Super Kabuto' apart is its distinctive fuzzy epidermis, covered in a mosaic of extensive white spots, giving the plant an intensely maculate or spotted appearance.
- Star-shaped Stem: It maintains the typical star-shaped or button-like form characteristic of the Astrophytum asterias species.
- Minimal or Absent Spines: The spines are minimal or often completely absent, contributing to its smooth, ornamental look.
- Coloration: The base color ranges from grey-green to dull green, with the white spots creating a beautiful contrast.
- Variety of Spot Patterns: Different forms of 'Super Kabuto' exist, distinguished by variations in the patterns and density of the white spots, including "white-type," "snow-type," and "zebra-type" (also known as "V-type" or "Tiger").
- Showy Blooms: Like the standard A. asterias, it can produce attractive yellow and crimson blooms in the spring.
Origin and genetics
- Mutation and Hybridization: The 'Super Kabuto' cultivar is thought to have originated from a naturally occurring mutation in a single A. asterias plant discovered in 1981 by Mr. Masaomi Takeo in an American garden center and later sold to Tony Sato in Japan.
- Complex Genetics: Propagations have involved cross-pollination with other A. asterias and A. capricorne, and potentially other Astrophytum species, leading to a complex genetic makeup that may include genes beyond just A. asterias.
- Potential for Spiny Clones: Due to its hybridized nature, spiny clones can occasionally appear.
Care and cultivation
- Summer Grower: 'Super Kabuto' is a summer grower, meaning it actively grows during the warmer months.
- Light: It thrives in bright sunlight, ideally a Western or Southern windowsill or under grow lights. Light shade to full sun is generally suitable, with richer colors developing in light shade.
- Watering: Water sparingly from March to October, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Avoid watering during the winter months when temperatures are cooler (5-15°C).
- Soil: Use a well-draining cactus and succulent soil mix, preferably with 70% to 80% mineral grit like coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Avoid heavy, water-retaining soils, which can lead to rot.
- Hardiness: 'Super Kabuto' can tolerate some frost if kept dry, but it's best to protect it from freezing temperatures by bringing it indoors during winter.
- Growth Rate: It is a slow-growing cactus
