Astrophytum asterias cv. Star Type is one of the most sought-after cultivated forms of the famous Sand Dollar Cactus, admired for its unusually deep, sharply defined ribs that create an exceptionally crisp star-shaped silhouette. Unlike typical Astrophytum asterias, this cultivar develops dramatic angular rib geometry while maintaining the species' naturally spineless form, smooth blue-green epidermis, and distinctive white woolly areoles. The result is a plant that appears almost sculpted rather than grown. Large mature specimens of Star Type are seldom encountered, as Astrophytum asterias is an exceptionally slow-growing species that requires many years to achieve this degree of size and substance. This particular specimen displays beautifully developed rib structure, outstanding symmetry, and the quiet presence that only age can produce. Its substantial size and remarkable form make it an exceptional centerpiece for any serious Astrophytum collection.
Care Instructions
☀️ Light
Bright light to full sun. Several hours of direct sunlight each day will encourage the best form, color, and flowering.
💧 Water
Water thoroughly during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry completely before watering again. Keep nearly dry during winter dormancy.
🪨 Soil
Requires an extremely fast-draining mineral-rich cactus mix.
🌡️ Temperature
Protect from frost. Prefers warm temperatures and excellent air circulation.
🌬️ Humidity
Low humidity is preferred.
📈 Growth Habit
Extremely slow-growing solitary cactus with exceptional longevity and increasingly sculptural character as it matures.

Collector Notes
Astrophytum asterias is native to a remarkably small region spanning southern Texas and northeastern Mexico, where wild populations have declined due to habitat loss and illegal collection. Today, mature cultivated specimens such as this represent many years of careful horticulture and are highly prized by collectors around the world. The Star Type cultivar is especially admired for its crisp, deeply sculpted ribs, giving the plant an almost perfectly geometric appearance that becomes increasingly impressive with age.
