The Astrophytum asterias cv. Star Type is a cultivar (cultivated variety) of the Star Cactus (Astrophytum asterias) that is distinguished by its unique star-shaped stem.
Here's a breakdown of its characteristics:
· Star Shape: The defining feature is the star-shaped stem, which is created by ribs that are more or less deeply recessed within the plant's body, while the suture line between the ribs is turned outward.
· Appearance: It has a non-branched, flat, dark green stem with a diameter of 8-16 cm and a height of 2 to 6 cm. It lacks spines but has white tufts of hairy scales (trichomes) sprinkled over the stem.
· Flowers: Similar to the common A. asterias, it produces large, yellow flowers (up to 75mm in diameter) with a red throat at the apex during the warmer months.
Cultivation
· Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light, but can be acclimated to full sun.
· Soil: Requires a well-draining, sandy cactus or succulent mix.
· Watering: Needs infrequent watering, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
· Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures (above 70°F) in the summer and cooler, more moderate temperatures in the winter.
· Fertilizer: Benefits from a balanced, diluted fertilizer (like a 20-20-20) during the growing season (spring and summer).
· Repotting: Repot regularly, ideally at the start of the growing season, to accommodate growth.
