🌵

Alluaudia procera is among the most iconic plants to emerge from Madagascar's extraordinary spiny forests. Instantly recognizable by its tall vertical stems lined with small rounded leaves and protective spines, it creates a silhouette unlike anything else in cultivation.

Often referred to as the "Madagascar Ocotillo," Alluaudia procera bears a superficial resemblance to the ocotillos of the American Southwest, yet evolved independently on an island separated by thousands of miles and millions of years of evolution. This remarkable example of convergent evolution only adds to the fascination surrounding the species.

In habitat, Alluaudia procera can eventually form small forests of towering spiny columns rising above the surrounding landscape. Mature specimens become increasingly dramatic with age as additional branches emerge and the trunks thicken, creating an unmistakable vertical presence.

This specimen already exhibits the qualities collectors seek most: substantial height, excellent vigor, strong branching potential, and the elegant rhythm created by rows of leaves running along the stems. Even from across a garden, it commands attention while maintaining a refined, almost minimalist beauty.

Unlike many succulent species that rely on unusual colors or dramatic forms, Alluaudia captivates through repetition, proportion, and scale. Its narrow stems, paired leaves, and orderly spination create a living pattern that becomes more striking the larger the plant grows.

Few Madagascan species deliver such immediate visual impact while continuing to improve year after year.

A remarkable species prized for its:

towering architectural stature

iconic Madagascar heritage

distinctive leaf-and-spine patterning

and dramatic vertical presence

A true statement plant that brings the character of Madagascar's legendary spiny forests into cultivation.

Care Instructions

☀️ Light

Bright light to full sun. Best growth and strongest structure develop with several hours of direct sunlight daily.

💧 Water

Allow soil to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly during active growth, then allow the soil to become nearly dry before watering again. Reduce watering during winter.

🪨 Soil

Requires a fast-draining mineral-rich cactus or succulent mix. Excellent drainage is essential for long-term success.

🌡️ Temperature

Protect from frost. Prefers temperatures above 45°F and thrives in warm conditions.

🌬️ Humidity

Low humidity is preferred. Good airflow helps maintain healthy growth and strong root systems.

📈 Growth Habit

Upright spiny succulent tree that develops tall vertical stems lined with small rounded leaves. Can eventually become a dramatic multi-stemmed architectural specimen.

✍️ Special Note

During periods of drought or dormancy, the plant may naturally shed some or all of its leaves. This is a normal adaptation and not a sign of poor health.
