Agave titanota, also known as the chalk agave, is a medium-sized, perennial succulent native to Oaxaca, Mexico. It is prized by collectors and gardeners for its striking, architectural appearance and robust, drought-tolerant nature.

KEY FEATURES

·         Leaves: The plant forms a rosette of thick, wide leaves that can reach 1–2 feet in length and up to 5 inches in width. The leaves are broadest at the tip and taper toward the base.

·         Foliage color: Leaf color varies depending on the specific form or cultivar. It ranges from ghostly white or pale blue to deep gray-green.

·         Spines: The margins of the leaves are lined with pronounced, sometimes wicked-looking, teeth. These jagged edges and the sharp terminal spine give the plant a rugged, ornamental appeal.

·         Size: A solitary rosette typically reaches 1–2 feet tall and 2–3 feet wide.

·         Flowering: Like other agaves, A. titanota is monocarpic, meaning it flowers only once in its lifetime and then dies. Mature plants produce a tall flower stalk, up to 10–20 feet high, with yellow flowers. The bloom can take many years to appear, earning it the common name "century plant".

        CARE REQUIREMENTS

·         Light: Prefers full sun but can tolerate some shade.

·         Soil: Requires very well-draining, gritty soil. Good drainage is crucial to prevent root rot.

·         Watering: Water regularly during the growing season in spring and summer, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering in winter to about once every one to two months. The plant is highly drought-tolerant once established.

·         Hardiness: Hardy down to approximately 25° F (-3° C), but should be protected from hard frosts.

·         Propagation: Can be propagated from seeds or by removing offsets (suckers) that grow from the base of the plant.

·         Handling: Handle with care due to the sharp leaf tips and marginal spines.
