Aeonium ‘Blushing Beauty” is an award-winning hybrid succulent with rosettes of pale green, spoon-shaped leaves that develop intense red to pink, "blushing" edges when grown in bright, full sun or stressed. It reaches up to 2 feet tall and wide, with yellow flowers in spring. It is drought-tolerant, prefers well-drained soil, and thrives in Mediterranean-like climate.
APPEARANCES and CHARACTERISTICS
This plant is a hybrid of Aeonium canariense and Aeonium arboreum 'Zwartkop', created by horticulturist Jack Catlin.
- Foliage: Rosettes are made of glossy, spoon-shaped leaves. While primarily green, they turn bronze or red with sun exposure or during winter.
- Flowers: Mature plants may produce small, star-shaped yellow flowers in late winter or spring.
- Dormancy: Like many Aeoniums, 'Blushing Beauty' goes dormant in the heat of summer. During this time, the rosettes may curl inward to conserve water.
- Monocarpic Nature: Individual rosettes that flower will die afterward, but the plant typically produces many offsets at the base to continue growing.
CARE and GROWING CONDITIONS
'Blushing Beauty' is generally easy to care for but has specific watering needs compared to other succulents.
- Light: Requires bright light to maintain its red coloration. It thrives in full sun to partial shade, though it may need protection from intense afternoon sun in extremely hot climates.
- Water: Prefers the "soak and dry" method. Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil is dry. Unlike some succulents, Aeoniums have shallow roots and may need more regular watering during their active growing season (winter and spring).
- Soil: Needs porous, well-draining soil. A standard potting mix is often preferred over a dedicated cactus mix because Aeoniums tolerate slightly more moisture than other succulents.
- Hardiness: Suitable for USDA zones 9b–11b. It is frost-tender and should be moved indoors if temperatures drop below 25°F–30°F.
