Adromischus marianae ssp. herrei 'Red Coral' is a rare, slow-growing succulent prized by collectors for its bizarre, "alien-like" texture and vibrant red-to-maroon foliage. Native to the granite hills of South Africa, this compact plant stays small, typically reaching only 4 to 6 inches in height.
APPEARANCES and CHARACTERISTICS
- Foliage: Thick, sculptural leaves covered in warty bumps and ridges, giving them a texture often compared to coral, lava rocks, or dried plums.
- Coloration: While young leaves may start green, they transition to deep red, purple, or maroon under bright light or stress.
- Flowers: Produces small, tubular green flowers with pinkish tips on a stalk up to 10 cm long, typically in spring or summer
CARE and GROWING CONDITIONS
To maintain its compact shape and intense red color, this plant requires specific arid conditions.
- Light: Needs bright, direct sunlight or very bright indirect light. Full sun exposure is essential for the "Red Coral" to develop its signature deep red pigments.
- Watering: Extremely drought-tolerant. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings . Avoid overwatering at all costs, as it is highly susceptible to root rot.
- Soil: Use a very gritty, fast-draining mix. A blend of cactus soil with 50% to 70% mineral grit like pumice, perlite, or coarse sand is recommended.
- Temperature: Prefers warm environments (50°F to 86°F) and is not frost-tolerant. Protect it from temperatures below 45°F
