Cleistocactus colademononis, also known as the Monkey Tail Cactus, is a unique and sought-after cactus species that's admired for its long, trailing stems covered in soft, white, hair-like spines. This distinctive feature gives it the common name "Monkey Tail".

Here are some key facts about Cleistocactus colademononis:

Appearance and Growth Habit:

  • Trailing Stems: The most notable feature of this cactus is its long, thin stems that cascade and trail, making it ideal for hanging baskets or tall planters. The stems can grow quite long, reaching up to 5 feet or more.
  • Soft, White Spines: The stems are densely covered in soft, white, hair-like spines, giving the cactus a fuzzy appearance and feel. These spines also provide protection from herbivores and the sun.
  • Flowers: This cactus produces vibrant, tubular flowers in shades of red or orange. They typically bloom in late spring and early summer and can rebloom throughout the growing season under optimal conditions.

Native Habitat:

  • Bolivian Andes: Cleistocactus colademononis is native to the high-altitude regions of Bolivia and Argentina, where it grows on rocky cliffs and in dry valleys.
  • Epilithic: It's an epilithic species, meaning it grows on rocks in its natural habitat.

Care and Cultivation:

  • Light: Monkey Tail Cacti thrive in bright, indirect sunlight or partial sun. Avoid prolonged exposure to intense midday sun, which can scorch the stems.
  • Watering: Water sparingly and allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering is a common problem and can lead to root rot.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix.
  • Temperature: This cactus prefers warm temperatures during the growing season (60-80°F) but can tolerate brief periods of colder temperatures down to 28°F. A cool rest period in winter (50-55°F) can encourage flowering.
  • Fertilizer: Fertilize sparingly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, diluted cactus fertilizer.
  • Propagation: Monkey Tail Cactus is easily propagated through stem cuttings. Allow the cuttings to dry and callous before planting.

Other Interesting Information:

  • Award of Garden Merit: Cleistocactus colademononis has received the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).
  • Pollinator Attraction: Its vibrant red flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies.
  • Toxicity: It is considered non-toxic to humans and pets, although the spines can cause irritation if handled carelessly.
  • Drought-Tolerant: As expected for a cactus, it is highly drought-tolerant.

Cleistocactus colademononis is a captivating and relatively easy-to-care-for cactus that makes a fantastic addition to any plant collection or as a hanging plant.
