Monadenium ritchiei, also known as Euphorbia ritchiei, is a fascinating succulent plant from Kenya.
Key characteristics:
- Appearance: It has a columnar shape with small, rounded protrusions on the stem called tubercles, arranged in spirals. Stems are typically green and can develop red or purple tones in direct sunlight.
- Leaves: Leaves appear during the active growing season but drop off when conditions become dry or seasons change.
- Flowers: Bright, hot pink flowers called cyathia bloom at the stem tips in late summer and fall. These flowers are distinct from those of other Euphorbias, with a hooded structure.
- Growth habit: It spreads by underground shoots and forms large clumps. Plants can reach a height of 10 to 12 inches. The stems may initially grow upright, then lean over and creep along the ground.
- Origin and habitat: Native to East Africa, particularly Kenya, it thrives in rocky, arid, and semi-arid regions at altitudes around 1150-1300 meters above sea level. It prefers steep, stony slopes with some water in summer and dry conditions in winter.
- Growing conditions:
- Light: Prefers partial shade, but can tolerate full sun which may result in red-blushing stems.
- Watering: Needs very little water, especially when established. It is important to let the soil dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering, especially in winter, can lead to rot.
- Soil: Requires well-drained, mineral-rich soil, such as a succulent mix.
- Hardiness: Hardy in zones 11a and 11b, tolerating temperatures down to 7°C (44.6°F). It cannot tolerate freezing temperatures.
- Flowering: Temperature fluctuations can encourage blooming. Aim for daytime temperatures around 70-75°F (21-24°C) and cooler nights at 60-65°F (15-18°C).
Note: The name Monadenium ritchiei is currently accepted, while Euphorbia ritchiei is considered a synonym. This is due to a taxonomic shift where Monadenium was placed under Euphorbia to avoid extensive name changes within the large genus.
Important: The plant contains a white, latex sap that can irritate the skin or cause allergic reactions. Handle it with gloves and eye protection.
