Gymnocalycium anisitsii subs. damsii f. cristatum is the crested (cristate) form of the popular "Chin Cactus." Unlike the typical globular shape of the species, this form grows into a fan-shaped or undulating ribbon-like structure due to a mutation in the plant's growing point.
APPEARANCES and CHARACTERISTICS
- Appearance: Features a fan-shaped stem that can grow up to 30 cm long with age. The body is green to brownish-green but often takes on a brownish-red or coppery tinge when exposed to full sun or environmental stress.
- Ribs & Spines: It has broad, notched ribs that form "chin-like" protrusions. Each areole typically holds 5–8 short, pale-white to yellowish radial spines; central spines are usually absent.
- Flowers: It is known for being free-flowering, producing funnel-shaped flowers from the center. Flowers are typically white to light pink, reaching about 6 cm in length.
CARE and GROWING CONDITIONS
- Light: Prefers bright, filtered light or morning sun. While it can tolerate direct sun, it is prone to sun scorch during the hottest parts of the day.
- Watering: Water regularly during the summer growing season, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Keep the plant nearly dry in winter to prevent rot.
- Soil: Requires a well-draining mineral cactus mix (e.g., 70-80% grit like pumice or perlite) to ensure the roots do not sit in water.
- Temperature: Hardy down to approximately -5°C (23°F) if kept completely dry, but generally prefers warmer conditions in USDA zones 9b–11b.
