Cleistocactus winteri, also commonly known as the Golden Rat Tail Cactus, is a fascinating and visually appealing cactus species belonging to the Cactaceae family.

Key Characteristics:

  • Appearance: Forms large, tangled mounds of long, drooping, golden-colored stems covered in short, bristly spines.
  • Growth: It's a branching, columnar cactus with fairly rapid growth.
  • Flowers: Produces vivid orange to salmon-pink, tubular flowers, typically blooming in the spring and summer. The flowers can last for several days.
  • Stems: Cylindrical, pendant, or trailing, reaching up to 35 inches (90 cm) in length and 3/4 to 1 inch (2 to 2.5 cm) in diameter.
  • Origin: Native to Bolivia, where it grows on cliffs in the province of Florida at altitudes of about 1400 to 1500 meters.

Cultivation and Care:

The Golden Rat Tail Cactus is relatively easy to care for and is suitable for both beginners and experienced growers. It thrives in well-draining soil and prefers filtered bright light to partial shade. Water moderately during the growing season (spring and summer), allowing the soil to dry out between waterings, and reduce watering in winter. It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11 and should be protected from frost. Fertilize with a low-nitrogen, high-phosphorus cactus fertilizer during the growing season to promote blooming. Repotting is recommended every 2-3 years, and it can be easily propagated from stem cuttings or seeds. Its trailing nature makes it perfect for hanging baskets.

Conservation Status:

  • Cleistocactus winteri is listed as Endangered (EN) by the IUCN due to collection for ornamental purposes.

Interesting Facts:

  • Cleistocactus colademononis, the Monkey Tail Cactus, is sometimes considered a subspecies.
  • It is a rapid grower.
  • Its flowers remain open for several days, unlike many other cacti.
