Thrixanthocereus senilis, now commonly known as Espostoa senilis, is a columnar cactus native to South America, characterized by its dense, white, hair-like spines. It's a popular choice for collectors due to its unique appearance and relatively easy care requirements.

Key characteristics:

  • Columnar Growth:

It has a tall, cylindrical shape, growing to impressive heights in its natural habitat and reaching several meters tall in cultivation.

  • White Spines:

The most distinctive feature is the dense covering of fine, white, hair-like spines that give it a "hairy" or "wooly" appearance.

  • Flowers:

In spring and summer, it produces delicate, white or cream-colored flowers along its stems.

  • Slow Growing:

It's a slow-growing cactus, taking many years to reach its full size, but older specimens can be quite striking.

  • Multiple Offsets:

Older plants may produce offsets (pups) at the base, which can be difficult to remove.

  • Native to Peru:

It originates from northern Peru, specifically the Olmos valleys.

Care:

  • Light: Requires bright, direct light, but can tolerate some shade.
  • Watering: Prefers to dry out between waterings and should be watered sparingly, especially in winter.
  • Soil: Well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix is essential.
  • Temperature: Hardy to USDA Zones 9 and above, tolerating temperatures down to 25°F.
  • Potting: Can be grown in pots or planted in the ground in suitable climates.
