Kalanchoe beharensis var. subnuda, also known as Naked Feltleaf or Feltleaf, is an interesting and unusual succulent tree-like shrub native to Southern Madagascar. It is a variety of the more common Velvet Elephant Ear, but with one key difference: its leaves are glabrous (hairless), giving them a smooth, almost plastic-like surface instead of the velvety texture of the typical species.

Key Characteristics:

  • Leaves: Large, undulating, slightly triangular, light olive-green leaves with a smooth, hairless (glabrous) surface.
  • Growth Habit: A tree-like succulent shrub that can reach heights of up to 12 feet in ideal conditions, though it's often seen smaller in cultivation. Older leaves eventually fall off, revealing an attractive exposed trunk.
  • Flowers: Produces small, greenish-yellow flowers in winter or spring.
  • Hardiness: Frost tender, requiring protection from temperatures much below 30°F. Thrives in USDA Zones 11-12 outdoors. Can be grown in containers and overwintered indoors in cooler zones.
  • Watering: Drought tolerant, requiring little to occasional watering. Needs moderate watering in autumn and spring, thorough watering in summer (allowing soil to dry between waterings), and only occasional watering in winter. Overwatering is a common problem.
  • Light: Prefers full sun or light shade. Appreciates some afternoon shade in hot temperatures.
  • Soil: Needs well-drained soil, such as a sandy loam with pumice or lava grit for added drainage. Avoid rich soils and fertilizer.
  • Uses: A great sculptural succulent for gardens in warm climates or in large containers. An interesting houseplant as well.

Important Notes:

  • The genus name Kalanchoe comes from an adaptation of a Chinese name for a plant in the genus.
  • The species name beharensis refers to Behara, Madagascar, where the species was originally discovered.
  • The variety name subnuda refers to its hairless (glabrous) leaves.
  • This variety was reportedly introduced into cultivation from collections by Pierre Fischer and Dick Felger.

In summary, Kalanchoe beharensis var. subnuda is a unique and captivating succulent known for its large, smooth, undulating leaves and sculptural form. It is relatively low-maintenance, drought tolerant, and prefers a well-drained soil and bright light.
