Native to the coastal desert of northern Chile, this exceptionally slow-growing species develops a compact body that matures toward the characteristic grey to ash-colored epidermis from which \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003ecinerea\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e takes its name, punctuated by woolly areoles and dramatic dark spines.
