Astrophytum myriostigma var. tulense is a variety of the Bishop's Cap cactus, Astrophytum myriostigma.
Key Characteristics:
- Origin: This specific variety originates from Tula and surrounding areas in Tamaulipas and San Luis Potosí, Mexico.
- Stem: Distinctly columnar, growing up to 90 cm (and occasionally up to 150 cm) tall and 10-20 cm in diameter.
- Appearance: Bright green, covered in minute white hairy scales that give it a chalk-white or silvery-grey appearance. These scales are made of fine, interwoven hairs.
- Ribs: Typically has 5 ribs when young, which increase in number as the plant matures. The ribs are generally vertical or twisted, deep, prominent, and range from very broad and sharp to rounded.
- Flowers: Funnel-shaped, glossy yellow, and sweet-scented, usually less than 5 cm long. They bloom intermittently throughout the warm months from April to September.
- Habitat: Grows on stony, calcareous soils and prefers low densities in its natural habitat.
- Distinction from the nominotypical subspecies: Compared to Astrophytum myriostigma subsp. myriostigma, var. tulense has a taller, more slender, and columnar stem. The flower of subsp. tulense also has a smaller mean perianth diameter, a higher mean number of stigma lobes, and fewer tepal rows.
Cultivation:
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light.
- Watering: Water sparingly, letting the soil dry completely between waterings.
- Soil: Prefers well-draining, sandy soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix.
- Fertilization: Benefits from a low-nitrogen fertilizer, applied sparingly during the growing season.
- Propagation: Typically propagated through seeds.
