Astrophytum myriostigma v. nudum f. variegata is a specific variety of the Bishop's Cap cactus, also known as Star Cactus. This cactus is highly prized for its unique appearance.
Characteristics:
- Variegation: It exhibits patches, stripes, or sectors of yellow or orange alongside its green stem, giving it a distinctive variegated look.
- Spineless stem: The 'nudum' variation means it lacks the white flecks commonly found on other Astrophytum myriostigma, resulting in a smooth, bright green, blue-green, grey-green, or mauve-green color, depending on the clone.
- Star-shaped form: A cross-section of the stem reveals a perfect star shape, formed by its deep ribs.
- Flowers: It produces glossy yellow, funnel-shaped, and sweet-scented flowers.
Care requirements:
- Sunlight: Thrives in light shade to full sun, but it's important to provide partial shade or filtered sunlight to avoid burning, especially in strong direct sunlight.
- Watering: Water sparingly during the growing season (March to October), allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Keep it dry during winter dormancy. Overwatering is a risk, especially during the resting phase.
- Soil: Use a well-draining, mineral substratum with little organic material, such as a cactus potting mix with added limestone chippings or mineral grit.
- Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures during the growing season (70-85°F). Keep it away from temperatures below 50°F. During winter dormancy, a cooler room (around 60°F) is beneficial. It is hardy to 23°F (-5°C) for short periods.
- Propagation: Can be propagated via cuttings, seeds, or grafting. Variegated forms must be propagated vegetatively to preserve the variegation.
- Hardiness: Delicate and cannot withstand subfreezing temperatures below 19.4°F (-7°C).
Note: The variegation on this plant is a natural mutation that can sometimes vary in appearance or even revert back to a solid green form.
